Donor Physical Examinations

 

To ensure the safety of the donor during the donation process, to evaluate and determine the most appropriate donation method, and to confirm that patient can receive suitable stem cells, there are several examination that the donor has to undertake prior to the donation.

The examination includes the following:
1.
Doctor consultation (Evaluate donor’s own and family medical history.)
2.
X-ray and ECG test (Evaluate your heart and lung capability)
3.
Infectious diseases tests: Tests includes B-type and C-type Hepatitis, HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus), STS (Syphilis), CMV (Cytomegalovirus), HTLV (Human T lymphocyte virus)
4.
Blood and biochemical tests: Including heme, Hematocrit, blood cell quantity, urine and faeces examinations.
5.
For female donors, pregnancy test is required.

In addition, doctor will also provide you prescription for iron and folic acid. Iron and folic acid will have to be taken for approximately a month in order to enhance your hematopoietic function.

You will receive a medical evaluation report 2 weeks after the exam stating whether or not you are suitable to donate bone marrow or Peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells. In the case where the report indicates that your physical conditions are not suitable for donation, or a particular examination result was not within the normal value, you may be requested to be examined again. According to regulations, the medical institute performing the examination is responsible to report health authority about any positive results of notifiable diseases, such as HIV.

Post Examination Notes:
1.
Please notify the Stem Cell Center if your contact information has changed.
2.
After the physical examinations until six months after the donation, stem cell donor MUST NOT donate blood.
3.
From after the physical examinations to six months after the donation, please take notice of any sign of pregnancy.
4.
Avoid traveling in epidemic areas.
5.
Avoid infectious diseases
6.
After the date of transplantation is set, start taking iron and folic acid to enhance your hematopoietic function.
7.
Iron and folic acid are to be taken after meals to decrease agitation to the stomach. After taking iron, drinks with caffeine, such as tea, coffee, coke, CAN NOT be taken. Iron and folic acid cannot be taken with antacid or Tetracycline in order to avoid impeding of absorption.
8.
You may be notified of donation cancellation after you have completed drawn of autologous blood, or after you have been injected GCSF. This is due to changes to patients conditions.
9.
According to regulations, the medical institute performing the examination is responsible to report health authority about any positive results of notifiable diseases, such as HIV.
