Umbilical Cord Blood

Q1.
I want to donate the umbilical cord blood. How can I donate? How to contact with the BTCSCC?

A:
The Tzu Chi cord blood bank was established in 1999. The store capability for cord blood was planned on the target of 12,000 bags. Currently, the space of cord blood store tank will be occupied in the near future. If you are expecting after Nov. 01, 2008, we will not be able to store it.

Q2.
How much will be charged for cord blood donation?

A:
Although the average cost for each bag of the umbilical cord blood including collection and storage takes more than one million NT dollars, the BTCSCC is a non-profit organization for public use, the donors do not have to pay any fee for collection or storage.

Q3.
Is there any risk for the umbilical cord blood donation?

A:
In fact, there is no risk to collect the cord blood for mother in labor and her baby. The gynecological physician may decide not to collect cord blood, if the delivery will cause massive hemorrhage to threat mother’s and baby’s life.

Q4.
I have contacted with the cord blood bank, how should I decide for public donation or for private storage?

A:
It is an honorable pleasure for baby to help others at birth. We would like to invite more donors to join our registry, you can find this topic on the following website for more information. http://www.worldmarrow.org/index.php?id=242

Q5.
How would the donated cord blood be processed?

A:
If the collected cord blood is qualified for the BTCSCC standard, it will be tested for several infectious diseases, counted for the numbers of cells, before frozen in a liquid nitrogen freezer for storage. If there are too few cells or plaques in cord blood, we may discard it according to the hospital hazardous disposal regulation, or we may provide to a certified lab for academic research, but not for commercial research purposes.

Q6.
How do I know the donated cord blood has been qualified and stored in the BTCSCC?

A:
The qualification for a bag of cord blood will not be confirmed until BTCSCC finished all collection tests and the 6 months follow up for the baby is done. We will inform you in mail regarding the storage status for your cord blood.

Q7.
Who will be qualified to use the donated cord blood?

A:
It is available for donation to any patient who applies for a match through attending physician, and the matched cord blood unit is found.

Q8.
How long is the preservative period for the umbilical cord blood?

A:
Since the application of umbilical cord blood has only been developed in the late 20 years, therefore we do not have sufficient data to prove its maximum duration. According to the current information, if stored in the barrel with liquid nitrogen in the temperature of -190 Celsius degree, the cord blood can be saved over 15 years. The BTCSCC will check regularly the cells numbers in cord blood that stored in the freezer in order to make sure the quality of cord blood can be used for the patient until the match is found.

Q9.
Do we have the first priority to use the cord blood after the donation?

A:
The moment you decide to donate your baby's cord blood to the BTCSCC for public use, you have given up your ownership. You or your baby will not have any right to take it back or have the first priority to use it. If your baby need his/her own cord blood in the future and it's still available, then it will be the best match to use.

Q10.
Will BTCSCC inform me if my donated cord blood found a match?

A:
In order to keep the confidentiality of all information, BTCSCC will not answer any questions to the donor and family members regarding if it's been provided or the mother’s test report for collecting umbilical cord blood. If the test report showed any legal transmitted diseases, we will notify you according to the Health regulation.

Q11.
How much will be charged for transplant of umbilical cord blood?

A:
The surgery of cord blood transplantation may claim compensation from the Na tional Health Insurance; the patient may require to pay the cost difference of wards or meals during hospitalization. The BTCSCC is founded for charity and our mission is to help more patients with blood diseases. Currently, we are expecting the Bureau of National Health Insurance to set the administration fee schedule for charging the matching and procurement for the umbilical cord blood.

Q12.
What is the cost for the matching of the umbilical cord blood?

A:
Although the transplantation of umbilical cord blood may claim the compensation from the National Health Insurance, the costs of blood test and administrative fees for the registry are not covered by the Insurance. The BTCSCC will charge a temporary deposit of NT$300,000 for the procurement before the Bureau of National Health Insurance finish the evaluation of the fee schedule. The payment of blood test will be charged by the actual examining costs. Once the fee schedule is confirmed with the Bureau of National Health Insurance, all payments will be redeemed or adjusted.
